This Book Is Gay was challenged for LGBTQ+ content and sexual education. It is described as a coming out guide for LGBTQ+ teens. It also contains information on stereotypes and falsehoods about the community, and how to find support. This book was one of three challenged for removal in Texas during 2021. The book was labeled as "pornographic" and the Texas superintendent called for criminal investigations for the teachers who made the book available to students. The superintendent stated "There are two genders. There’s male, and there’s female. And I acknowledge that there are men that think they’re women. And there are women that think they’re men. And again, I don’t have any issues with what people want to believe, but there’s no place for it in our libraries." THe superintendent focused on challenging books about sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community, with almost no books of other content being challenged.
